Synthetic vs starch-based hydrogel

Field life, absorption and biodegradation — the honest trade-offs between the two families.

Hydrogel science — Published

Two families

Fully synthetic hydrogels are cross-linked polyacrylates. Starch-based and starch-grafted hydrogels attach absorbent chains to a starch backbone, or use modified starch as the network itself.

The trade-offs

In general terms:

  • Field life: synthetic grades usually last longer in soil.

  • Absorption: synthetic grades usually absorb more per gram.

  • Breakdown: the starch portion biodegrades; polyacrylate segments break down far more slowly.

  • Consistency: natural starch raw material can vary more between batches.

Reading biodegradation claims

"Biodegradable" means little without a test method, conditions and timeframe. Ask which standard was used, whether the test was in soil or compost, and what percentage degraded over what period. Sarovar shares composition and test evidence for its starch-based grades on request.
